You've booked the trial class. Now your child is asking questions, you're wondering what to wear, and maybe there are some nerves in the back seat on the drive over — yours included.
Here's exactly what to expect at a first martial arts class, based on how we run trial classes at Prospect Martial Arts in Prospect, CT.
Before Class: What to Wear and Bring
Keep it simple:
- Comfortable athletic clothes — a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants are perfect
- Bare feet — shoes come off before stepping on the mat
- A water bottle
- Nothing else. No uniform, no gear, no equipment. If your child enrolls, a uniform (called a dobok) comes later.
Arrive about 10 minutes early. That gives your child time to see the space, meet an instructor, and watch other students warming up — which does more to calm nerves than any pep talk.
The First Five Minutes
A new student is never just tossed into the group. An instructor will greet your child by name, show them where to line up, and pair them with the class in a way that matches their age and comfort level.
Every class starts the same way: students line up, bow, and go through a warm-up together. The routine itself is reassuring — your child just follows along, and within minutes they're moving, not worrying.
What Happens During Class
A typical kids' class at PMA runs like this:
- Warm-up — jumping jacks, stretches, movement drills
- Basics — punches, blocks, and kicks practiced in lines, with instructors correcting and encouraging
- Skill of the day — a technique, a piece of a form, or a self-defense drill broken into simple steps
- A fun finish — a game or challenge that leaves kids smiling on their way off the mat
New students aren't expected to keep up perfectly. Instructors watch for the trial student and give them extra attention — our classes always have multiple instructors on the floor, so nobody gets lost in the crowd.

What Parents Do During Class
For most programs, you'll watch from the seating area — and we encourage it. Kids love looking over and seeing you watching.
One exception: in our Little Tigers program for ages 3–4, a parent or guardian joins their child on the floor for every class. For our youngest students, that shared experience is part of the design.
What If My Child Is Shy or Refuses to Participate?
It happens, and it's completely normal — especially for younger kids. Our instructors have seen every version of first-class nerves, and we never force participation. Sometimes a child watches the first ten minutes from the sideline and then joins in. Sometimes they participate at half-speed the whole class and come back the next week ready to go.
There's no failed first class. Every child who walks through the door is a win.
After Class
The instructor will check in with you and your child: how it felt, what questions you have, and what program fits best. If you want to enroll, we'll walk you through the options. If you want to think it over, that's genuinely fine — no pressure, no hard sell. You can also read our FAQ page for answers to common questions about cost, schedules, and belt progression.
The Bottom Line
First classes are designed for first-timers. Your child doesn't need experience, athleticism, or confidence to start — those are the things martial arts builds.
